Feature: BIN 8945 Wine Bar & Bistro
After 27 years of wine education, 30-year-old proprietor David Haskell has composed this considerable cellar for his first venture. Yes, you've calculated correctly; he started learning about wine at 3 years of age from his father. At 12, he discovered that there was more to food than burgers and pizza thanks to a family friend, no less than chef Michel Richard. Haskell's wine bar is charming and elegant: a brick wall on one side, a golden-bronze finish on another, dark wood panels in the back, a burgundy velvet banquette, and trompe l'oeil place mats. The visible wine cellar boasts three distinct temperature chambers (60°, 65° and 67°); prices range from $32 to $550 for bottles, and $8 to $22 by the glass. A small-plates menu offering diverse tastes accompanies the worldly wines that Haskell describes with great knowledge. You can choose from the oyster and raw bar, Gorgonzola fritters, spicy glazed shrimp, pan-roasted mussels, fried green tomatoes and grilled asparagus. To complement more robust wines, go for the charcuterie plate, the catfish, the confit of duck leg or the tender steak frites. We like the cheese plate, which for once does not come with dried apricots or figs (not necessary at all with the cheese). Try Haskell's mother's brownies, a great recipe, or the banana-rum cheesecake. Note that dinner is served until 1:30 a.m., and the bartender is happy to create cocktails that don't involve wine. After-dinner cigars and Cognac can be enjoyed on the patio.
